Restoring a yellowed lens is maintenance, and no policy covers it: oxidation from sun and age is wear, the same category as worn wipers. That work is billed directly and takes a fraction of the time a claim would.
A headlight broken in a collision is a different item entirely. Yes, and usually more than people expect. An oxidized lens scatters much of the light the bulb produces instead of projecting it down the road, so you lose distance while oncoming drivers get more glare. Restoring the lens surface puts the beam pattern back where the manufacturer designed it, without changing bulbs or wiring.
Most vehicles are done the same day, and a straightforward pair of lenses is often finished in a couple of hours including cure time for the clear coat. Replacing an assembly depends on parts availability and whether the headlight needs aiming or system recalibration afterward.
A failed seal, a cracked housing, or a bulb access cover that was not seated after a bulb change. Headlights breathe through small vents, so a light mist that clears once the lights have been on for a while is normal. Water droplets that pool at the bottom or fog that never clears are not, and they shorten the life of both the bulb and the reflector.
It depends which side the fog is on. Haze on the outer surface is sanded and resealed, and the lens comes back clear. Fog on the inside means moisture is getting into a sealed housing, and that requires opening the assembly to find the failed seal — if the reflector inside has corroded, the headlight is replaced rather than restored.
The yellowing is oxidation of the polycarbonate lens after the factory UV coating wears through. Sunlight does most of the damage, road grit accelerates it by sanding away what is left of the coating, and heat from the bulb works on the plastic from the inside. Cars parked outdoors in South Florida show it years earlier than the same model kept in a garage.
A restoration that ends with a sprayed UV clear coat typically holds its clarity for several years in Florida conditions, and longer on a car that is garaged. A polish-only job with no coating is a different story: bare polycarbonate starts hazing again within months, which is why the sealing step is the part that determines how long the result lasts.
